Predicting the Civil Engineering Characteristics through Soft Computing Models

Recently, scientists have used different soft computing models for estimating various civil engineering characteristics, since they are economical, reliable, and time-saving. Among all, Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) have been the most efficient ones, which are used by scientists in multiple occasions. This study is the comprehensive review on capability of ANFIS and ANN models in predicting different civil engineering characteristics.

Effect of Sand Fines and Water/Cement Ratio on Concrete Properties- Juniper Publishers

Juniper Publishers- Journal of Civil Engineering Abstract Sand fines (clay/silt) and water/cement ratio have been reported to be one of the causes of weakness in concrete strength. A study was conducted to determine the effect of fines content in sand and water/cement ratio on some properties of concrete. Fines content in sand of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and 12% as well as water/cement ratio of 0.55, 0.6 and 0.7 were used. The concrete were prepared using the basic mix 1:2:4. Workability test on flesh concrete as well as compression and split tensile strengths were conducted in accordance with BS 1881. The results show that, workability of concrete decreased as fines content increases. At the same level of fines content, workability increases when the W/C increased. Designing Steel Bridges against Fire Hazard- Juniper Publishers

Juniper Publishers- Journal of Civil Engineering Abstract Bridge fires can lead to significant economic and public losses; however, no provisions are specified for fire resistance of bridge structural members in current codes and standards. This paper presents an approach for mitigating fire hazard in steel bridges. The approach comprises of two steps, estimating fire risk in a bridge, and then developing strategies for enhancing fire resistance of a critical bridge. An analytical procedure is employed to derive a fire-based importance factor to estimate the vulnerability of a bridge to fire, and then a sequential finite element analysis is carried out to develop strategies for mitigating fire hazard in that bridge. The validity and applicability of this approach is demonstrated through a case study on a steel bridge that experienced fire recently.
