Undergraduate Civil Engineering Seniors Literature Review on Orifice Meter Applications- Juniper Publishers

Civil Engineering Research Journal-Juniper Publishers   Abstract In this literature review paper, undergraduate senior Civil Engineering students from California State University, Northridge, under the supervision of Dr. Tadeh Zirakian and Dr. David Boyajian, introduce a research on orifice meter and its applications in real life while analyzing the effect of variables, such as flow, velocity, pressure, and volume. Orifice flow meter is the most commonly used device for gas flow measurement. For a most accurate measurement, the orifice meter should be applied to gas flows, which are steady or vary slowly with time, are in the turbulent flow region, and are well below sonic velocity. The gas should be single phase and not contain suspended particles. Availability of sufficient permanent pressure loss is a requirement for any head-measuring device and must be considered in its application. Completion of this virtual research achieved several educational endeavors, namely enabli...

Utilizing DIC Technique for Visualizing the Failure Modes of Concrete Specimens- Juniper Publishers

Image
Civil Engineering Research Journal- Juniper Publishers   Abstract Throughout the years of development in laboratory testing of concrete some need has been urged to measure the deformations on the specimens. As there are some methods for this purpose such as putting sensors on the specimens, the need for a new method was still existed. Old fashion methodologies utilize long cables for measuring deformations. On the other hand, digital image correlation (DIC) is a remote technique which can be applied without any physical interaction with the specimen. Being relatively a low-cost option and measuring the displacements in micro level of precision made it very desirable for the researchers over the years. Materials such as concrete can be assumed to heterogeneous as it consists of steel reinforcements, pozzolans, cement, water, and aggregates. Therefore, failures along the concrete specimens can vary from very simple to very complex. Considering these reasons, determining any fai...

Should Companies Invest in Sustainability?- Juniper Publishers

Civil Engineering Research Journal- Juniper Publishers Short Communication In April 2018, MIT Press published my book, Balancing Green: When to Embrace Sustainability in Business (and When Not To). The book was a result of five years of primary research interviewing hundreds of executives in industry, government and NGOs. My original intent was to argue, as did others, that business should take the lead because many governments are paralyzed by discord and political calculus. Industry, I thought, being the source of most environmental impacts, can and should lead the way (Figure 1). Over five years and over 500 pages later, I now realize that not only business is not taking the lead -it really should not do it. To understand this viewpoint, we have to think about what role industry plays in society. Vast supply chains span the globe to deliver goods and services to humanity. Through advances in information and communications technology, companies have lowered their costs and vastl...
