Classification of Weathering in Rocks and Its Engineering Implications- Juniper Publishers

Image
Juniper Publishers- Journal of Civil Engineering Abstract A critical review on the description and classification of weathering in rocks has been presented in this paper. This paper starts with a brief description on several factors causing weathering in rocks followed by the weathering mechanism and the description of weathering in rocks. A review of existing codes and guidelines on weathering and its implications to describe the engineering properties of rocks has been presented. From the point of view that weathering process modify the mass engineering properties of rocks which are quite unpredictable, this type of review work becomes necessary. The present paper forms a useful source of information for geologists and geotechnical engineers working on weathered rocks. Keywords: Rock; Weathering; Classification; Guidelines; Engineering properties Introduction Weathering of rocks is a purely subjective term and i...

Designing Steel Bridges against Fire Hazard- Juniper Publishers

Image
Juniper Publishers- Journal of Civil Engineering Abstract Bridge fires can lead to significant economic and public losses; however, no provisions are specified for fire resistance of bridge structural members in current codes and standards. This paper presents an approach for mitigating fire hazard in steel bridges. The approach comprises of two steps, estimating fire risk in a bridge, and then developing strategies for enhancing fire resistance of a critical bridge. An analytical procedure is employed to derive a fire-based importance factor to estimate the vulnerability of a bridge to fire, and then a sequential finite element analysis is carried out to develop strategies for mitigating fire hazard in that bridge. The validity and applicability of this approach is demonstrated through a case study on a steel bridge that experienced fire recently. Keywords: Fire hazard; Bridges; Fire; Mitigation strategies; Finite element analysis ...

Circular Concrete: an Organisational Revolution?- Juniper Publishers

Civil Engineering Research Journal- Juniper Publishers Opinion Last summer, the European HISER conference surprised everybody with the announcement from one of Tongji University’s top institutes that high-rise towers had been built from recycle concrete in areas of China that are prone to earth quakes. At the same conference, Francois de Larrard, research director of Lafarge Holcim, informed the attendees that, from that moment onwards, the company offered recycle mortar as a standard product and that engineers who felt insufficiently prepared for the new material could refer to their new handbook for help. The surprise was understandable because the research that led to the breakthroughs highlighted at the conference had not been well published and the few scattered results that had reached the journals did not provide a complete picture. Before the conference, most engineers had believed that it was not economically feasible to produce high-grade new concrete from end-of-life (E...
